Cody Henrichs, MFA Sculpture 2013, installed a large public sculpture “The Hannah” in Kennedy Plaza’s Burnside Park that will be up for 6 months to a year in this busy downtown location. The project resulted from a National Endowment for the Arts “Our Town” grant to the City of Providence which funded a public art class in the spring of 2012 taught by Professor Ellen Driscoll. Six projects generated by the class were commissioned out of the class funding including “The Hannah”. The original Hannah was a boat that created a famous act of insurrection against a British boat, the Gaspee, which was roving the waters collecting taxes that early residents found unjust. In Henrich’s version, the boat seems to crest an imaginary wave in the park, a poetic allusion to decades of urban renewal turbulence in this location.
